Tips to Strengthen Your Immune System for Seniors

As we get older, we naturally start to worry more about our health and wellness. Part of this is the fact that our immune systems aren’t what they used to be, and they may have started to decline.

But this doesn’t mean you have to accept it without a fight. Now is the time to start doing something about it by strengthening your immune system. If you do this, your body will be better equipped to fight off diseases and this will help you lead a longer and happier life.

Here are our best tips to strengthen your immune system as we age:

  1. Eat your fruits and vegetables — You’ve been hearing this your whole life, so it should come as no surprise. Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins (like Vitamin C) that act as antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. These can help boost your immune system. Start with a healthy dose of whole fruit, salads, and steamed vegetables. Really help yourself to avocadoes, broccoli, kale, and blueberries, but also include apples, lettuce and spinach, bell peppers and citrus (such as oranges). The old adage about an “apple a day” is also true here.
  1. Get vaccinated — Every year, hundreds of people in the United States die from some form of the flu. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) encourages everyone to have an annual shot, but this is especially true for seniors who are more susceptible to the flu.
  1. Get healthy — This one should also be a no-brainer. But if you are a senior citizen and you still smoke, it’s time to quit. Smoking has done damage for years, but at this time in your life it can greatly impact your immune system. Also, start working out and exercising more. This doesn’t have to be a massive weightlifting regiment. Any daily activity can help jumpstart your immune system and keep you feeling healthy.
  1. Supplements — Finally, you may also wish to consider adding a herbal supplement or multivitamin to your daily dosage. However, you should always check first with your doctor about these as some may interact negatively with your medications.

It seems like every other week there is a new article about some scary disease that is cropping up. And many of these seem to target those with weakened immunities such as senior citizens. That’s why you need to do all you can to boost your immune system to stay healthy.
