It’s common knowledge that as we age, there’s always an increase in personal health and medical issues. One such issue that can, in fact, lead to other problems is a lack of sleep. For many people over fifty, sleep becomes a major problem because the body begins to produce less melatonin, the natural hormone that helps with sleep regulation.
Unfortunately, these sleep problems can lead to other health issues such as depression, lack of energy, and difficulty to recuperate from injuries or illnesses. In order to help senior citizens who may be having sleeping issues, here are some tips for getting a good night’s rest:
– Melatonin: One option if your melatonin levels are low is to take melatonin tablets. Many people use these as a natural sleep aid. However, check with your doctor before taking these as they may interfere with some of your other medications. You can also improve the body’s natural development of melatonin by keeping the lights dimmed as you get ready to go to bed.
– Distractions: Before you go to bed, you need to cut out all distractions. Sleep masks and even earplugs can cut out light and noise disruptions (like snoring). If you don’t like earplugs, consider using a white noise machine. You should also not read from electronic devices for an hour before bed. The light from these devices can disrupt sleep patterns. Finally, get rid of the TV in your bedroom as this can be a disruption as well. Basically, your bedroom should be set aside for sleep.
– Keep a schedule: The habit of ritual can help your body prepare itself for sleep. Because of that, you should develop your own rituals such as laying out clothes, dimming the lights, playing music, brushing your teeth and the like. Also, make sure that you go to bed at the same time every night to help you regulate your sleep.
– Oils: Many people have discovered the soothing qualities of essential oils for many health problems. A few drops of lavender on your pillowcase can naturally relax the body and help you drift off without the help of sleeping pills.
If you are having trouble sleeping, it is important that you not rely on medications such as sleeping pills as their long-term use can cause dependency problems. But if you take time to follow some of these tips, you can naturally help to regulate your sleep so you can feel fresh and relaxed in the morning.
